Concussion Awareness:

When in doubt, sit them out and keep them out!

As the science of evaluating and managing concussions has advanced, key findings emphasize the need for education of players, their families, coaches, medical staffs and the public at large on the signs and symptoms of concussion. There is also a critical need for early identification and proper management of a concussion.

Learning to recognize the signs and symptoms of a concussion and removing an athlete from play can make a difference in recovery. If a player is recognized to have signs or symptoms, pleas make sure they are seen by a medical professional immediately.

Examples of Signs:

  • Clutching the Head after being Hit in the Head
  • Confusion, Forgetfulness, Memory Loss
  • Dazed or Stunned
  • Moving Clumsily, Off Balance, Unsteady

Examples of Symptoms:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Sensitivity to Light or Noise
  • Double/Blurred Vision

Returning to play protocols after a sport-related concussion is a decision and process that should be made in partnership with Scottish Rite or the players family physician. Until a player is cleared by the medical professional, they should not return to play.
